Hide and Show Files and Folders in Ubuntu (Linux)

In Ubuntu/Linux, there is no direct method to hide files and folders like windows. You should rename the files and folders.

Hide files and folders

Rename file/folder with “.”(dot) in front of name.

For example, if  you want to hide a folder “Work” then rename it to “.Work”.

In Linux, if a file name starts with . (dot), it is considered as a hidden file/folder. Hidden folder hide all its sub-folders and files in it. That is why .htaccess file is hidden in Ubuntu, by default.

Show Hidden files and folders

Use “Ctrl + H”  to see the hidden folders/files.

Then remove the preceding .(dot) from name.
