If you upgrade to windows 8 from previous version instead of new installation, files that were used in previous version is kept inside windows.old folder. This folder have large size and waste your disk space(usually more than 6 GB). If you are confident with current installation, you can remove this folder. Normal delete wouldn’t help usually since they are system files.
Follow these steps to remove windows.old folder
- Open Disk Cleanup by searching in windows 8 (or by right-click the installation drive and select Properties. There you can find disk Cleanup option. or by searching Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files in settings on windows 8).If you’re prompted to choose a drive, select the drive that you just installed Windows on, and then click OK.
- In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, click Clean up system files.If you’re again prompted to choose a drive, select the drive you just installed Windows on, and then click OK.
- Select the Previous Windows installation(s) check box, and any other check boxes for the files you want to delete, and then click OK.
- In the message that appears, click Delete files.
